sfAWIS Mentorship Program
sfAWIS is proud to launch a new mentoring program for junior and
mid-career professionals in science and engineering. Mentoring is a unique opportunity We are
still building up our pool group of mentors. We want you to join our network of Mentors!
The program launch is planned for September 2010.
About the Program
In this Mentoring program, grad students, post-docs, professionals in science and engineering are
paired with a peer volunteer mentor who works in academia or industry to provide one-on-one
mentoring. While most mentoring programs focus mainly on women who are training to become
scientists, this program offers mentorship to any women working in academia or industry, either
entering their professional track or at mid-carreer, who are looking for support or advice. Some
mentees may be looking for support in these areas: advancing their career beyond the glass
ceiling, redefining their work-life balance, or changing fields within science or engineering.
Who can be a mentor?
Anyone who has a degree in science or engineering and has
professional experience as a researcher
in academia (postdocs included!), the pharmaceutical industry, or the biotech industry, as
an entrepreneur, or has experience in a non-bench scientific career and is interested in the
program can be a mentor. There is no special training required. Your personal experience is your
training, and WE NEED YOUR HELP! Postdocs and other early-career professionals can both be
mentors and be mentored.
While the time commitment is flexible and negotiable, the impact of sharing your experience with a
graduate student, post-doc, or other professional can be really tremendous.
You don't have to be a
member of AWIS to become a mentor---though membership is encouraged.
